According to statistics
compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration and the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, large truck crashes account for less
than one percent of all motor vehicle crashes in the
United States each year. However, as you might suspect,
the injuries and property damages resulting from a large
truck crash can be potentially much more serious than
those from an automobile crash.
Your chances of dying in an automobile crash are about
one out of 150 accidents. However, your chances of dying
in a crash involving a large truck is almost one in
every four accidents. A typical loaded large truck,
referred to as “18-wheeler,” has a gross vehicle weight
of about 80,000 pounds. A typical passenger vehicle will
weigh anywhere from 3,000 to 8,000 pounds. Physics
dictates that having a crash in a passenger vehicle with
an object which weighs 10 or 15 times more than your
vehicle will hurt you much more than the truck driver.
As with any personal injury matter, it is essential that
you have an experienced attorney representing you in a
large truck crash case. There are many misconceptions as
to the cause of large truck crashes. Many people believe
that large truck crashes result from fatigue or truck
drivers who are under the influence of illegal drugs or
alcohol. While fatigue, illegal drugs and alcohol do
play a role in certain large truck crashes, these are
not the main causes of large truck crashes.
Study has shown that in two vehicle collisions involving
an at fault truck driver, vehicle brake problems,
not fatigue, alcohol or illegal drugs, is the most
common critical reason for the crash. Vehicle brake
problems are present in about
29% of these cases. Fatigue is attributed to 13% of the
cases. Illegal drugs account for about 2%, while alcohol
is involved in about 1% of these cases. There are
numerous factors which are involved in large truck
crashes. For example, it is critical to know if the
truck driver was using over-the-counter medication,
as this is much more likely to be a causal factor than
illegal drug use or even driver fatigue.
